The autumn quarter of the RTÉ photo competition is now open!

Please see below for the new guidelines for competition entries.

Closing date for submission of photos is midday on Wednesday 4th October 2012.

General information

Shoot the breeze or any other element of the weather that takes your fancy and you could be the next lucky person to have your photograph used as the backdrop for RTÉ Weather bulletins!

Develop your photographic talents and enter a photograph which best encapsulates some aspect of Autumn in Ireland. Your image could capture Urban and City scenes, Landscapes, Landmarks, Wildlife (Animal), Sea, and beyond! One winner and five runners up from the season will have their photographs selected to provide the backdrop for RTÉ Weather’s on-screen broadcasts. Why not share something that caught your eye, made you gasp in awe or simply gave you a giggle and your photograph could set the scene for RTÉ Weather bulletins.

You can see the winner and runners-up from the previous RTÉ Weather Photo Competition here.

To give you the best chance of winning, and to make sure that the photographs will work as part of the weather bulletins, we have put together a few guidelines and pointers for you.

What to photograph

Photographs may be taken in any Irish location. The winning photographs will be on screen at the same time as the weather presenters so it is best not to include recognisable people or brands and to keep the focal point of the picture on the right hand side.

Only colour photographs in a landscape format and only medium to wide shots are acceptable. A panel of judges nominated by RTÉ will select winners and their decision is final. Amateur photographers only may enter.

URBAN PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR OPENS FOR ENTRIES

Largest Annual Urban Photography Competition Goes Global:

Luxury Photo Safari Prize for Best Image Depicting Cities at Work

Property consultants CBRE, are delighted to announce their annual Urban Photographer of the Year competition opened for submissions for a fourth year with the news that entries are now welcome from across the globe. First launched in 2007 as a contest focused on Europe, the Middle East & Africa (EMEA), the Urban Photographer of the Years growth has been remarkable. It is now the largest competition of its kind in the world, receiving over 10,000 entries from more than 74 countries last year alone. Last year the top Irish entry was awarded to Keith Gaule of Navan, County Meath for his picture Waiting at the Stop. Mr Guy Hollis, Managing Director, CBRE Ireland commented: For the first time the contest is open to entries from all over the world reflecting the continuing success and popularity of our Urban Photographer of the Year competition. In Ireland alone the competition has generated significant interest and attracted unique talent with a record number of Irish entrants last year.

The competitions popular theme Cities at Work is designed to challenge amateur and professional photographers alike to capture what they consider to be the essence of urban life at any time of day, be it poignant, inspiring, quirky or amusing. The overall global winner of the 2012 competition will be able to choose a luxury photo safari from a range of exotic locations sponsored by CBRE. Prizes will also be awarded to two runners-up and for the 24 standout images representing each hour of the day. Mike Strong, Chairman & CEO of EMEA, CBRE, commented: Understanding how cities work is an integral part of CBRE’s business, but they are made up of so much more than just buildings and infrastructure. With over half the world now living and working in urban communities, particularly driven by the phenomenal growth of supermetropolis in regions such as China and India, cities not only provide a rich backdrop for those with creative flair and a sharp eye, but a focal point for charting societal development and change. We established this competition as a forum for celebrating the urban environment and to showcase the talent of our regions best photographers. I am delighted that the success of the contest is allowing us to globalise it this year and look forward to receiving the thought provoking images of city life that have come to represent this competition.
